ComicConAfrica’s Stand on Counterfeits

ComicConAfrica is undoubtedly one of the continent’s premier pop culture events kicking off in Cape Town 27 April to 1 May 2024. It is a fantastic experience if you are a fan of comics, movies, tv shows, cosplay and pop culture in general.

Apart from all the event has to offer there is another reason to talk about Comic Con. The organisers have taken significant and indeed groundbreaking steps to combat the sale of counterfeit goods at their events to ensure a safe and authentic experience for attendees and exhibitors alike. These include educating the vendors on the dangers of dealing in counterfeit goods and putting systems in place to effectively deal with complaints in regard to counterfeits at the events.

These measures aim to foster a culture of vigilance among vendors and attendees alike. By prioritizing authenticity, raising awareness, collaborating with various stakeholders, and implementing visible security measures, they uphold the integrity of the event as well contribute to the broader effort of combatting counterfeiting within the pop culture arena. They have, whether they realize it or not, raised the bar for such events in South Africa.

Who is SATAGA?

SATAGA is a recently formed non-profit entity with the aim of combatting the sale of counterfeit toy and gaming products in South Africa.

South Africa has a huge issue when it comes to counterfeits, especially in the toy and games industry.

The problem with combatting it, however, is that it is expensive and a legally intensive process resulting in very little being done to counter this issue.

With the ethos, if you want to go quickly, go alone. If you want to go far go together, SATAGA is the right partner for brandholders, retailers, distributors and any other interested party impacted by the sale of counterfeit goods within the toy and games industry in South Africa.
